Crathie, Scotland • United Kingdom
Originally this was built as an Estate House in 1390, but when Queen Vicoria and her husband Prince Albert visited Scotland for the first time in 1842 they fell in love with the country and purchased the Estate in 1852. The original Estate House was considered not large enough for the Queen, so they decided to built a new castle on the property - Balmoral Castle. The property has been inherited by Queen Elisabeth II and is now her private property, where she spends her summer holidays. During periods where the Queen is not living in Balmoral Castle it is open for visitors.
