No electricity - Embalse Tajo de la Encantade

El Chorro, Andalusia • Spain No electricity?! The photo of the fallen electricity pole is shot on the first day of a bike ride through Andalusia, Spain in 2009 before the financial crisis hit the world - but it seems to predict it. In 1905 a power plant was build in El Chorro, that still exists to this day. The plant relies on two water reservoirs one created by damming the Rio Guadalhorce, creating the Embalse Tajo de la Encantade, and one created up on the top of the mountain (opposite side of this river). During the night the water from the Rio Gualdalhorce is saved and diverted up to the mountain basin as not as much electricity is needed. During the day, when much energy is requested, the water from the mountain basin is routed back into the Embalse Tajo de la Encantade and the damm is opened so the turbines can create the necessary electricity from the water flowing back into its natural river bed of the Rio Guadalhorce. So in times of high water - during the day - this fallen power pole is covered by water. But since this photo is not shot during an electricity request peek it lies in the open...
