Forest Giant Owl - Caligo eurilochus
Vahr / botanica, Bremen, Bremen, Germany There are 21 different species of Caligo butterflies, which are commonly known as Owl butterflies due to their feathery apperance and the owl-like 'eyes' on the underside hindwings. It is likely that the eyespot acts as a sort of decoy, since these butterflies cannot fly very fast and so birds can easly follow them into their hiding. The position of the eye would have a bird deluded into targeting for ita dn by that only geting a part of the butterlfies wing instead of the body, so that the butterfly could possibly escape the attack. uuid="847847C6-17AB-491C-B027-061E8E7781EF" id="Germany lilleulven.com _K3_0539.dng Animal Macro Lilleulven.com"
