Common Poppy (Papaver roheas)
Grünerløkka, Oslo, Oslo, Norway Common Poppy - Papaver rhoeas Annual branched herb to 20 cm. Leaves Hairy, deeply loved, lowest stalked, upper sessile. Flowers 7-10 cm diameter, petals often with black blotch at base. Fruits Globose capsule, slightly longer than wide, glabrous. Habitat Arable fields, disturbed ground, roadside verges, especially on calcareous soils. Distribution Introduced in antiquity. Common on lowland throughout British Islands, but rare in Scotland and N Ireland. (Europe N to S Sweden.)
