Rozhen Monastery “St Nativity of Mother of God”
Rozhen, Blagoevgrad Province, Bulgaria The monastery is first mentioned in a greek manuscript from the 13s century, which is why it is believed that it was founded during the reign of despot Slav, a nephew of the Bulgarian king Caloyan (1197-1297). It is the only monastery, which was restored in the first centuries of the Ottoman rule and has survived until the present. The oldest buildings of the monastery date back to the 16s century, since a fire and plundering therafter destroyed the original buildings. It is well known for its beautiful carved iconostasis and frescoes. uuid="B0ACE15F-C8E7-4F3B-89C2-255ADB0A561F" id="Bulgaria lilleulven.com _K3_1187.DNG "
