Flakstadøya, Lofoten

Flakstadøya, Nordland • Norway Flakstadøya on Lofoten - north of the polar circle we have reached the Lofoten and its farms. Here at the Sundstraumen coastline, with the mountains in the background. Despite the fact that we are north of the polar circle there is no tundra yet, as you would expect it from North America, but farmable land due to the warmth of the gulf stream. The Lofoten are known for their dried codfish and their beauty - once they saved Norway from starvation since the dried codfish could be exchanged against much needed grains and the codfish then be sold to the catholic South Europe for the periods when they were not allowed to eat meat. Today the Lofoten are mostly known for their beauty, visited by tourists every year in summer and winter. During the summer you'll want to go for the landscape during the winter mostly for the chance of seeing the polar light. This photo is also published in Lille Ulven Photography's Lofoten calendars as well as the German Norway calendar.
